Biomining of land at Chennai Perungudi landfill

Tamil Nadu: Chennai has taken a major step toward waste management and environmental improvement. Corporation Commissioner G.S. Samiran has directed officials to implement a project to convert waste into compost on reclaimed land at the Perungudi landfill by next June, using a biomining process. This project is considered crucial to strengthening waste disposal and environmental protection efforts in the city.

Chennai generates a large amount of solid waste daily, a portion of which is dumped at the Perungudi landfill. Years of continuous accumulation of waste have severely impacted the land and environment in the area. To address this problem, the city administration has adopted biomining technology, which segregates old waste and reclaims the land.

This entire project is being implemented in six phases under the Swachh Bharat Mission at a cost of ₹350 crore. According to officials, 29.28 lakh cubic meters of waste has been segregated and processed scientifically so far. This process sorts the waste into useful and non-usable components, gradually preparing the land for reuse.

According to administrative information, five phases of this project have been completed, and approximately 96 acres of land has been successfully reclaimed. This land, previously rendered unusable due to the large amount of waste, is now being brought back into use after the biomining process.

Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran has directed officials to set up a composting unit on the reclaimed land. The project aims to transform waste into a resource and utilize it in an environmentally friendly manner. This will not only reduce pressure on landfills but also make the city’s waste management system more effective.

According to officials, the implementation of this project will generate compost from organic waste, which can be used for agricultural and greening purposes. This will promote sustainable waste management in the city and help maintain environmental balance.

The Corporation aims to complete the remaining phases in the coming months and fully redevelop the Perungudi landfill in a scientific manner. This initiative is considered a significant step towards cleanliness and environmental protection in the city.
