Tamil Nadu witnessed mixed weather conditions on Thursday; while temperatures exceeded 100°F in several districts, the formation of a low-pressure area over coastal regions has raised the likelihood of heavy rainfall in the coming days. The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a detailed press release outlining the current weather situation.
According to the Meteorological Department, the highest temperature in the state on Thursday was recorded at Madurai Airport at 104.9°F. Additionally, a temperature of 103.64°F was recorded in Madurai city. The capital, Chennai, also experienced intense heat, with temperatures reaching 103.28°F in Nungambakkam and 102.74°F in Meenambakkam.
Temperatures remained high in other districts as well: 102.38°F in Cuddalore and Trichy, 102.2°F in Vellore, 101.48°F in Erode and Tiruttani, 101.3°F in Paramathi Vellore, 101.12°F in Palayamkottai, 100.74°F in Parangipettai, and 100.4°F in Nagai. The steadily rising temperatures subjected residents to severe heat, resulting in relatively sparse traffic on the roads during the day.
The Meteorological Department noted that temperatures in several parts of the state remain above normal, prompting an advisory for people to exercise caution. Specifically, the public has been urged to avoid going out in the sun during the afternoon and to stay hydrated to protect themselves from the effects of the heat.
Meanwhile, signs of a change in the weather have also emerged. According to the department, a low-pressure area has formed over the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, which could lead to significant weather changes in the coming days. Under the influence of this system, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected in several parts of the state.
The Meteorological Department’s forecast indicates that rainfall is likely at various locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from Friday, June 26, through July 1. During this period, there is a possibility of lightning and strong winds accompanying the rain. Wind speeds could reach up to 50 kilometers per hour, potentially disrupting normal life.
This weather shift is likely to have a more pronounced impact, particularly in the districts of northern Tamil Nadu. Issuing a warning, the department advised residents of coastal and surrounding areas to remain vigilant, as weather conditions could change suddenly.
The department further stated that heavy rainfall is likely in the Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts on June 27. Additionally, weather activity is expected to intensify on June 28 and 29, with heavy rain and strong winds forecast for Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, and Kanyakumari districts.
Wind speeds in these districts could reach up to 50 kilometers per hour, potentially leading to incidents such as uprooted trees, power outages, and traffic disruptions. The administration has been placed on alert to ensure immediate action in the event of an emergency.
The Meteorological Department has urged the public to plan their travel with the weather conditions in mind and to avoid venturing out unnecessarily. Farmers have also been advised to take necessary precautions to protect their crops.
This combination of scorching heat and potential heavy rainfall is creating a challenging situation for the people of Tamil Nadu. While temperatures have already crossed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the rain and strong winds expected in the coming days will call for both relief and caution.
