Telangana: Decision to switch from rice to vegetablesRice farming usually gives income to farmers once in six months. However, a young farmer started growing vegetables on his two acres of agricultural land thinking that growing vegetables will give income in 40 days. Farmer Bhanuchander told Local18 that he earns an income of Rs 20,000. Now 50,000 per month. Bhanuchander is a young farmer from Vaddepally village in Edappally mandal of Nizamabad district of Telangana. Earlier he used to grow rice. However, he used to get money only once in every six months from the rice crop. This gave Bhanuchander the idea of growing vegetables. On his two acres of land, he grows okra, brinjal, pumpkin, sorrel leaves and spinach. Bhanuchander told Local18 that he spent around Rs 50,000 on seeds, fertilizers and pesticides as an investment. From the day the brinjal and okra crops are planted, they are harvested in 40 days. Every two days, okra produces 20 trays of produce. Every four days, brinjal produces 15 trays of produce. He said he sells each for about Rs 400. As a result, he earns about Rs 12,000 per week, which is equivalent to Rs 50,000 per month. This growing season lasts for six months. For the last three months, he has been harvesting the produce. There are still three months left for the crop to ripen. After this, he plans to harvest this crop and plant another crop. He urged the government to provide financial assistance to support farmers. When Bhanuchandra decided to take up vegetable farming, he selected crops that had a short growth cycle and could be harvested several times in a year. For example, okra and brinjal are known for their rapid growth and high yield potential. By choosing these crops, he ensured that he could start earning income just 40 days after planting.
