In its latest forecast issued on Monday, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Chennai Regional Centre stated that moderate rainfall is likely in eight districts, including Chennai, by 10 AM. Meanwhile, alerts for thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rain have been issued for several other districts. The Meteorological Department has advised the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
According to the Meteorological Department, moderate rainfall may occur at one or more locations in the districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari by 10 AM on Monday. These districts are likely to experience cloudy skies, intermittent rain, and strong winds in some areas.
Meteorologists state that a low-pressure area currently extends from North Interior Karnataka to the Comorin Sea region. Under the influence of this weather system, moisture levels have increased across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and surrounding areas, leading to widespread rainfall activity. As this system remains active, the intensity of rainfall is expected to increase in several districts in the coming hours.
The Meteorological Department has specifically predicted the possibility of heavy rainfall in the Nilgiris, Theni, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, and Cuddalore districts. Additionally, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms may occur at isolated locations in the hilly areas of Coimbatore district and parts of Puducherry. Strong winds are also expected in these regions, which could disrupt normal life.
According to the forecast, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is also likely at several places in districts adjoining the Western Ghats, the Cauvery Delta region, North Coastal Tamil Nadu, and Karaikal. Strong winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph may occur in these areas. The Meteorological Department has advised farmers, fishermen, and those working in open areas to exercise special caution.
Overcast skies and intermittent rain are expected throughout the day in Chennai and its surrounding areas. The rainfall could lead to waterlogging in several low-lying parts of the city.
