Madurai. Five people, including an infant aged around one and a half years, were killed and three others critically injured in a tragic road accident in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district on Monday. The horrific accident occurred on the Thumbaipatti four-lane highway near Melur, where a speeding car lost control, veered to the opposite side of the road, and collided with an oncoming vehicle and another car. The impact was so severe that the vehicles were mangled, causing chaos and panic at the scene.
According to reports, Sriram, a resident of Chennai, was traveling towards Madurai with his family for personal reasons. As their car reached the Thumbaipatti four-lane highway near Melur, the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle. Eyewitnesses stated that the car was speeding; after losing control, it crossed the divider and entered the opposite lane, where it collided violently with an oncoming vehicle and another car.
The collision was so devastating that the front section of the car was completely wrecked. Alerted by the sound of the crash, locals rushed to the scene and immediately informed the police and ambulance services. Residents initiated rescue efforts, attempting to extricate the occupants trapped inside the vehicle.
Five occupants of the car died on the spot. The deceased include Sriram (a Chennai resident), his wife Ranjana, and their infant child, Pranita (aged approximately one and a half years). Two other individuals also lost their lives in the accident. The severity of the crash is evident from the fact that the victims had no time to react, and several succumbed to their injuries right at the scene.
Three other people sustained serious injuries in the accident. They were immediately rushed to the Melur District Government Hospital by ambulance, where they are undergoing intensive medical treatment. Upon receiving news of the incident, the Melur police arrived at the scene, cleared the wrecked vehicles from the road, and restored the flow of traffic. The accident had caused a long traffic jam on the four-lane highway for some time. Police used a crane to remove the damaged vehicles, after which traffic returned to normal.
The police inspected the accident site, gathered evidence, and have initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary investigations suggest that speeding and the driver losing control of the vehicle were likely the primary causes. Following the accident, the bodies of the deceased were sent to the government hospital for post-mortem examinations. The bodies will be handed over to the families once the post-mortem procedures are complete. Relatives and acquaintances of the deceased rushed to the hospital upon hearing the news, where the family members were inconsolable. The news of the innocent child’s death left everyone in deep shock.
