Several trains to run up to Tambaram from August 5 to 19.
Chennai. Southern Railway has announced temporary changes to the operations of several trains due to ongoing infrastructure and repair work at Chennai Egmore Railway Station. According to the railway administration, from August 5 to August 19, certain key express trains will not run all the way to Chennai Egmore. During this period, many trains will operate only up to Tambaram Railway Station and commence their return journeys from there.
A press release issued by the Salem Division of Southern Railway states that this decision was taken to ensure the repair and maintenance work at Chennai Egmore station is completed safely and on schedule. Prioritizing passenger safety, the railways have temporarily modified train services.
According to railway officials, Tambaram will serve as the terminal and starting point for several trains—including the Salem–Chennai Egmore Express—during this period. This means these trains will depart from their originating stations according to schedule but will not proceed to Chennai Egmore. Similarly, in the return direction, these trains will operate from Tambaram.
The railways clarified that work on tracks, signaling systems, and other essential structural repairs is underway at Chennai Egmore station. As normal train operations are not feasible during these works, some services have been temporarily short-terminated. This will allow the repair work to be completed without interruption.
Southern Railway has urged passengers to check the updated status of their trains before commencing their journeys. Passengers who have booked tickets to Chennai Egmore may need to use suburban rail services, the metro, buses, or other modes of public transport to travel between Tambaram and Egmore. The railways have advised passengers to plan their travel in advance to avoid any inconvenience.
The railway administration stated that once the repair work is completed, all train services will resume operating to Chennai Egmore along their normal routes and according to their scheduled timings. For now, this arrangement will remain in effect only from August 5 to August 19. Chennai Egmore is one of the busiest railway stations in South India. A large number of long-distance trains operate from here to various cities in Tamil Nadu as well as to neighboring states. Thousands of passengers travel through this station daily. Consequently, periodic repair work is undertaken to maintain and modernize the station’s infrastructure, ensuring safer and smoother rail operations in the future.
According to railway officials, such maintenance work is essential for passenger safety and the quality of rail services. Regular inspections and repairs of tracks, signaling, and other technical systems minimize the risk of accidents and enhance the safety of train operations.
Southern Railway has also advised passengers scheduled to travel during this period to rely solely on official railway notifications. Any updates regarding changes, schedule revisions, or train operations will be communicated through official railway channels.
The railway has requested passengers to verify their train timings and boarding stations before leaving home. If a train’s terminal station has been changed to Tambaram, passengers should plan their travel accordingly to avoid unnecessary inconvenience and loss of time.
Normal train operations at Chennai Egmore station will resume once the repair work is completed. The railway expects to finish all technical and structural tasks within the scheduled timeframe, thereby ensuring better and safer rail services for passengers in the future.
