Seafood unit accident: Odisha woman dies

Odisha: Another 21-year-old female worker has died in an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu. The total number of Odia workers killed in the accident has risen to 14. The incident has sparked an atmosphere of mourning among the families of the deceased, raising serious questions about the safety of migrant workers in the region.

The deceased woman has been identified as Anjali Juang, a resident of Kharaba village in Harichandanpur block of Keonjhar district, Odisha. She worked at a seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu. After the accident, she was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, where she died during treatment.

This incident has once again raised serious questions about the safety of migrant workers, workplace standards, and recruitment processes. The administrative machinery of both Odisha and Tamil Nadu has been activated following the incident.

Meanwhile, allegations of illegal recruitment and the use of fake identity cards have also surfaced in this case. The Odisha Labor Department has filed a complaint at the Telkoi police station against Srikant Juang, a labor contractor from Rangamatia village. It is alleged that he employed minor girls in the name of providing them jobs in the factory and used fake documents to do so.

According to the complaint filed by the Assistant Labor Officer of Telkoi, the contractor lured the workers with promises of higher wages and better work opportunities before sending them to Tamil Nadu in October 2025. This process also involved several minor girls, whose Aadhaar cards and other identity documents were manipulated to appear as adults on paper.

Officials say that this case is not limited to an industrial accident, but serious irregularities in the recruitment process and human trafficking are also being revealed. The police and labor department are now investigating the entire network to determine how workers from rural areas were duped and sent to work in other states.

Following this incident, the Odisha government has also begun monitoring the situation. The process is underway to provide assistance to the families of the deceased and to identify the affected workers. An investigation is also underway to determine whether safety standards were followed at the factory.

Local residents and social organizations have demanded a robust monitoring system for migrant workers to prevent such incidents in the future. They say that people from poor and rural areas often fall prey to unscrupulous agents, lured by the promise of better employment.

An administrative investigation is currently underway, and reports have been sought from the relevant officials. Strict action is expected against those responsible.
