Tamil Nadu: The government has issued a government order to form a new Curriculum Design Committee to reform the state’s school education curriculum and adapt it to the needs of the times. This committee will be chaired by former Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) scientist Mayilsamy Annadurai. The government’s objective is to make school education modern, practical, and relevant to future needs.
The state government has been working towards a phased transformation of the school education system for a long time. As part of this process, expert committees were previously formed to review the curriculum, teaching methods, and evaluation systems. Now, the new government has taken this process forward by forming a new Curriculum Design Committee.
Previously, during the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government’s tenure, a high-level committee and an expert committee were formed to prepare the new curriculum. These committees included experts from various fields, including ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan, Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, and scientist T.V. Venkateswaran. At that time, Professor Sultan Ahmed Ismail was appointed the chairman of the committee.
The expert committee conducted a detailed study of the state’s existing curriculum, content, evaluation system, and teaching methods. It also solicited suggestions and opinions from teachers, parents, education experts, students, and other stakeholders. Based on the feedback received at various levels, the committee formulated several recommendations for improving school education and submitted a draft of the new curriculum to the government.
Based on these recommendations, the government decided to implement the new curriculum in a phased manner. In the first phase, the new curriculum has been implemented for students from grades 1 to 3 from the current academic session. The government believes that implementing the new teaching system in the early grades will improve students’ basic learning abilities.
Now, following the formation of the new government in the state, a new Curriculum Design Committee has been formed to further the education reform process. The government, led by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, has appointed former ISRO scientist Mayilsamy Annadurai as the chairman of this committee. Annadurai is known for his extensive experience in the fields of space science and education. The government hopes that the curriculum developed under his leadership will be developed keeping in mind the changing educational and technological needs of students.
The new committee will study various aspects of school education. It will consider topics such as curriculum structure, teaching methods, learning outcomes, evaluation systems, and making education more effective in line with future requirements. The committee may also seek suggestions from experts and stakeholders as needed.
The government states that it is essential for the education system to evolve over time to suit changing needs. The new committee has been formed to ensure better and quality education is provided to students. Necessary changes will be made to the curriculum based on the committee’s recommendations.
With the formation of the new Curriculum Design Committee, it is expected that the process of school education reform in Tamil Nadu will receive a new direction. The committee will submit its report to the government in the near future, after which the Education Department will take further action.
