National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma met President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday and recommended imposing President’s rule in West Bengal over the Sandeshkhali violence.
Earlier, other bodies including the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes and National Human Rights Commission had also recommended President’s rule in the TMC-ruled state.
Speaking to PTI after meeting the President, Sharma said the situation in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, is still very serious.
He said, “Sandeshkhali is not an isolated incident. Several incidents of violence have been reported in the state in the past and the state government has not taken any action. Therefore, the NCW has recommended President Draupadi Murmu to impose President’s rule in the state.” ” ,
Sharma said the President told her that she was aware of the situation in the state and was keeping a close eye on it.
A large number of women in Sandeshkhali have claimed that TMC leader Shajahan Shaikh and his “gang” forcefully took over large tracts of land, besides “sexually harassing” them.
