Maharashtra: Mumbai witnessed another spell of heavy rain on Wednesday morning. After a brief lull on Monday, the city has been experiencing continuous rainfall for the past two days. This continuous downpour has disrupted normal life in many parts of the city, leading to waterlogging on roads.
Several major areas of South Mumbai, including Parel, Dadar, Sion, Byculla, Colaba, and Marine Lines, experienced intermittent heavy rain throughout the night. The rain continued into the morning at many locations, causing waterlogging on roads. Office-goers and commuters in these areas faced significant inconvenience.
Waterlogging in crowded areas like Parel and Dadar slowed down vehicle movement. Traffic jams were also witnessed at many locations. Local trains and road traffic were also affected, causing delays for morning commuters.
Light to moderate rain was also recorded in the western and eastern suburbs. Reports of waterlogging have emerged in areas like Andheri, Kurla, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), and Mulund. The drainage system in these areas has also raised questions, as waterlogging has accumulated in many areas after a short spell of rain.
According to the Meteorological Department, rain is expected to continue in Mumbai and surrounding areas for the next few hours. Continuous downpours may worsen waterlogging in low-lying areas. The administration has appealed to people to exercise caution and avoid leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary.
Municipal Corporation teams are working to drain water from waterlogged areas. In many places, efforts are being made to remove water with the help of pumping machines. However, the continuous rain is hampering relief operations.
Local residents say that such situations arise in many parts of Mumbai every year during the monsoon season. Waterlogging has become common, especially in low-lying areas and suburbs. This not only disrupts traffic but also severely impacts daily life.
The rain has also affected railway and BEST bus services. Many local trains have been slowed, resulting in long waits for passengers. Bus routes have also been altered to avoid waterlogged areas.
School and office-goers also faced difficulties due to the rain. Many delayed leaving home, while others resorted to working from home.
The administration has appealed to citizens to heed weather department warnings and avoid unnecessary travel. Caution has also been advised in waterlogged areas.
The continuous rain in Mumbai has once again raised questions about the city’s drainage system and monsoon preparedness. If the rain continues in the coming days, the situation could worsen.
