Amritsar: SGPC objects to Jammu and Kashmir High Court’s decision on Sikh identity
Amritsar: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has strongly protested against the Jammu and Kashmir Superior Tribunal’s decision to not require ‘Singh’ or ‘Kaur’ after a person’s name. SGPC lawyer president Harjinder Singh Dhami has said that Sikh identity is not subject to worldly tribunals, but is based on conduct prescribed by the Sikh Gurus. The glorious history, principles and traditions of the Sikhs are hidden behind this. Given that the name of a Sikh cannot be determined without Singh or Kaur, the remarks of the Superior Tribunal of Jammu and Kashmir directly go against the values and style of life of the Sikhs. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said that although the decision of the Superior Tribunal of Jammu and Kashmir pertains to the Gurudwara Management Committee of Akhnoor district, it violates the principles and traditions of the SIJ. Violated the sentiments of Sij. , The Tribunal has no authority to comment on issues relating to the religious conduct of the Sikhs and suggestions and opinions in such matters should come from Sri Akal Takht Sahib and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. If these decisions are so arbitrary then the valuable values and fundamental principles of religions will not survive. Harjinder Singh Dhami said that SGPC will take appropriate steps after examining the decision of the Superior Tribunal of Jammu and Kashmir through legal experts.
