Major CBI action: CGST Superintendent arrested in Balasore, Odisha for taking bribe of Rs 50,000

Odisha: In a major action, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Balasore district, Odisha, arrested a CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) Superintendent red-handed while accepting a bribe. The accused officer, identified as Om Prakash Nayak, is accused of accepting a bribe of ₹50,000 from a firm owner.
According to reports, the accused officer is accused of demanding a bribe of ₹50,000 from the firm owner in exchange for processing a GST refund amounting to ₹1.6 million. The victim firm owner had previously filed a complaint with the CBI, following which the investigating agency took the matter seriously and initiated action.
After verifying the complaint, the CBI laid a well-planned trap. As soon as the accused Om Prakash Nayak accepted the bribe, the CBI team arrested him on the spot. This operation was carried out under strict surveillance, and the accused was caught red-handed.
Immediately after the arrest, the CBI registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and initiated further investigation. The investigating agency stated that the action was taken after obtaining sufficient evidence against the accused.
Following this, the CBI team conducted simultaneous raids at Om Prakash Nayak’s home, office, and other related locations. According to reports, the operation involved a team of approximately 27 CBI officers, who conducted the search for several hours.
During the raids, documents and digital records were also examined to identify other individuals who may be involved in such activities. The investigating agency is now also investigating the accused’s financial transactions and GST refund cases.
According to sources, the arrested CGST officer will be brought to the CBI regional office in the state capital for further questioning, where he will be questioned in detail. The agency is also trying to determine whether this case is part of a larger corruption network.
The arrest has created a stir in the revenue department and tax administration departments. This action by the CBI is being seen as a strong message against corruption.
CBI officials have stated that the investigation will be conducted in a completely impartial manner and if any other person’s involvement is revealed, action will be taken against them as well.
