Manipur political crisis: Permission to form government possible by February 13

Imphal: Manipur Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata on Sunday stated that the Centre is likely to allow the formation of a popular government in the state, which is under President’s Rule, with the state assembly under suspended animation since February 13, 2025.

Th. Satyabrata, the BJP MLA elected from the prestigious Yaiskuk Assembly constituency, was speaking to the media at a function in Imphal East district.

He expressed hope that the central leadership would allow the reinstallation of a BJP-led government in the state by February 13, 2026.

When asked by a reporter about the conditions under which the new government would be formed, the Speaker disclosed that the central leadership had assured the formation of the government during a closed-door meeting held in Delhi.

The BJP Manipur Legislature Party meeting was held on December 14, 2025, at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, in the presence of BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) Santhosh BL and Northeast Coordinator Dr. Sambit Patra.

The discussion, which centred on the peace and progress of Manipur, also included assurances to the Manipur BJP leaders regarding the formation of the new government by February 13, 2026.

In response to a query about the proposed BJP legislative meeting in Guwahati in the coming days, the Speaker stated that he had heard about the matter but evaded the query, saying, “Let us wait and see.”

The state has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, with the state assembly under suspended animation, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9, 2025.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) currently has 37 legislators in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. The total strength of the assembly is 59 due to one vacancy.

The ethnic violence that erupted between the Meiteis and Kukis on May 3, 2023, has so far claimed over 260 lives, and around 60,000 people were displaced.
