Himachal: Road and bridge damaged by floods in Kachrang.

Himachal: A cloudburst in the early hours of Wednesday triggered a flash flood in Kachrang village, located in the Nathpa area of Kinnaur district, causing extensive damage. Local infrastructure, drinking water schemes, and apple orchards have been affected by this natural disaster. While there have been no reports of casualties, the incident caused significant panic among the residents.
According to officials, the cloudburst occurred in the upper reaches of the Kachrang nala (stream) early in the morning, causing a sudden surge in water flow that rapidly spread across the area. Large quantities of debris washed down with the water, further exacerbating the situation. The strong currents damaged the link road connecting the village and completely washed away a pedestrian bridge over the stream, disrupting local connectivity.
Several drinking water schemes in the area were also affected by the flood, leading to water supply issues for the villagers. Additionally, the rushing water and debris damaged local apple orchards. As apple cultivation is a primary source of livelihood in the region, this damage could impact the rural economy.
Given the severity of the situation, the district administration immediately launched relief and rescue operations. Kinnaur Deputy Commissioner Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma stated that while public infrastructure and orchards have suffered damage, there have been no reports of loss of life or large-scale destruction of private property. He noted that administrative teams and officials from various departments reached the site immediately after the incident.
The administration has assessed the affected areas and initiated repair and restoration work. Relevant departments have been instructed to restore road connectivity and drinking water schemes as quickly as possible to provide relief to the local population. Relief operations are ongoing, and the situation is being closely monitored. Meanwhile, continuous rainfall has been recorded across several parts of Himachal Pradesh over the past 24 hours, with weather activity remaining more intense than usual in many areas. Sundernagar recorded the highest rainfall at 30.2 mm, while Solan and Shimla recorded 12 mm and 9.6 mm, respectively. Light rainfall was also observed in Dharamshala and Mandi, where 1.2 mm of rain was recorded.
According to the Meteorological Department, the persistent rain raises the risk of landslides and flash floods in the hilly regions. Consequently, the administration has advised people to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near rivers and streams.
The incident in Kachrang village has once again highlighted the threat of natural disasters during the monsoon season in hilly areas. Local residents are currently relying on relief and rehabilitation efforts, while the administration is working to restore normalcy.
