Virudhunagar: Questions Raised Over Lack of High-Level Inquiry 10 Days After Firecracker Factory Blast

Tamil Nadu: Serious questions have begun to arise regarding the investigation process into the firecracker factory accident that occurred in Kattanoor, in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district. The factory owners have alleged that, despite 10 days having passed since the tragedy, senior officials from the Central Government’s Department of Explosives Control have yet to visit the site or initiate a high-level inquiry.
This horrific accident took place on the 19th of last month, when a massive explosion rocked a firecracker factory located in Kattanoor. The incident claimed the lives of 25 people, while several others sustained serious injuries. The tragedy caused widespread panic in the area, and relief and rescue operations were carried out swiftly.
Immediately following the incident, local officials from the Department of Explosives Controlābased in Sivakasiāinspected the factory. Upon reaching the site, they conducted an inquiry to determine whether any banned chemicals had been used within the facility. During the investigation, chemical substances scattered across the factory premises were collected and sent for testing. This procedure is typically followed in the aftermath of such industrial accidents.
However, the factory owners contend that, despite the magnitude of this tragedy, neither the Deputy Chief Controller of Explosives (based in Chennai) nor the Chief Controller of Explosives (based in Nagpur) has visited the accident site thus far. They allege that, in the absence of a high-level inquiry, the actual causes behind the accident remain unrevealed.
The owners further stated that until senior officials visit the site and conduct a comprehensive investigation, it will remain unclear what triggered the accident and to what extent negligence or technical flaws were responsible. Furthermore, without such an inquiry, it will be impossible to recommend the necessary safety measures required to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, a sense of discontent and outrage is also palpable among the local residents and the affected families. They argue that the delay in the investigation processāeven after such a massive loss of lifeāis a matter of grave concern.
The Department of Explosives Control has not yet issued an official response regarding this matter. However, the local administration has stated that a preliminary investigation is underway and that all aspects of the incident are being thoroughly examined. This incident has once again raised serious questions regarding safety standards and the monitoring mechanism within the firecracker industry.
