Two cops suspended as ‘medically fit’ prisoner flees from custody at GMC

An accused arrested by the Vasco police on the charge of a theft case on Thursday morning escaped from the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim where he was taken for a check-up.

Following the incident, two constables Gaurish Satardekar and Ashok Adur, who had accompanied the accused have been placed under suspension.

According to police, the accused identified as P Ramesh Subayya (50), a native of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh was arrested in a theft case reported at Vasco in February this year.

The police said that the accused had allegedly broken a window glass of a vehicle parked near the Mormugao municipal building and fled with Rs 2.5 lakh belonging to a businessman.

Based on CCTV footage, the businessman on Thursday recognised the accused standing near a bank at Vasco and restrained him. He was later handed him over to the Vasco police for further investigation.

The Vasco police in the evening took him for a medical examination to the Sub-District Hospital, Chicalim and then to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim since the accused had plaster of paris cast on his leg.

But in the GMC as one of the constables was collecting his medical report, the accused fled from the hospital.

The Vasco police have now issued a look out notice for the accused and have launched a man hunt to nab him.
