The country will never forget the sacrifice of immortal martyr Hemu Kalani

Durg. Senior Congress leader Arun Vora attended the statue unveiling program of the great revolutionary patriot, martyr Hemu Kalani. Vora paid tribute to martyr Hemu Kalani and remembered his contribution in the freedom struggle. Vora said that Indians can never forget the patriotic spirit of martyr Hemu Kalani and his passion for India’s independence. The martyrdom of Martyr Hemu Kalani can never be forgotten. On the occasion of the unveiling of the statue, eminent citizens of Sindhi community Dr. Rajpal, MIC member Abdul Ghani, Bhola Mahobia, Prakash Geete and other dignitaries were present. Hemu Kalani was born on 23 March 1923 in a Sindhi Jain family in Sukkur, Sindh Division of Bombay Presidency, during the British rule in India.

Sukkur is now in Pakistan. He was one of the youngest revolutionaries to be martyred for the country. At the age of only 19, two months before his 20th birthday, he was hanged on the orders of the British government. Hemu Kalani is also called Bhagat Singh of Sindh. Hemu was courageous since childhood and remained active in revolutionary activities since his student days. When Hemu was only 7 years old, he used to lead revolutionary activities with his friends in the British colony carrying the tricolor flag. In 1942, the 19-year-old teenage revolutionary created a stir in Sindh state with his group with the slogan Quit British India.

Hemu used to request people to boycott all foreign goods. Hemu Kalani always led his comrades in guerrilla activities against the tyrannical Firangi government and burning their vehicles. Hemu was trying to derail a British train which had weapons and a fierce squad of British officers to suppress the revolutionaries by opening the fish plate of the track at Hemu Sakhar bridge. The police arrested him. Hemu was sentenced to death in the court. Hemu was given the inducement to avoid death sentence if he revealed the names of his associates in jail. But he did not tell anyone’s name. He was given death sentence on 21 January 1943. When he was asked his last wish before hanging, he expressed his wish to be born again in India. They hanged themselves shouting slogans of Iqlab Zindabad and Bharat Mata Ki Jai.
