It is believed that worshipping Shiva with a sincere heart during Sawan fulfills devotees’ wishes and bestows Lord Shiva’s blessings. According to religious traditions, certain dietary rules are also followed during this month.

During Sawan, a large number of people consume sattvic foods and avoid foods like onion and garlic. Many also limit their consumption of yogurt and certain dairy products. Along with religious beliefs, some scientific reasons are also cited for this.

Religious Beliefs for Avoiding Onion and Garlic
In Hindu religious beliefs, onion and garlic are classified as tamasic and rajasic foods. It is believed that their consumption can increase excitement in the body and restlessness in the mind. During the month of Sawan, devotees worship Lord Shiva and strive to control their mind and senses. For this reason, many people avoid onion and garlic during this period.

According to religious belief, eating satvik food calms the mind and allows one to concentrate more on prayers and spiritual activities. This is why fruits, milk, fruits, grains, and pure vegetarian food are preferred during the month of Sawan.

Religious Reasons for Not Eating Yogurt
Milk and yogurt are considered especially important for the anointing of Lord Shiva during the month of Sawan. Devotees offer milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and Ganga water to the Shivalinga. Religious belief holds that offerings to the Lord should not be consumed. For this reason, some people avoid eating yogurt during Sawan.

However, not everyone follows this rule. In many regions and traditions, yogurt is commonly consumed during Sawan.

Scientific Reasons Are Also Important
In addition to religious beliefs, some scientific reasons are also given for eating during Sawan. The month of Sawan is the rainy season. During this period, the atmosphere is high in humidity, which can slightly affect the digestive system. According to experts, eating light and easily digestible food is considered better for health during this season.

The rainy season also increases the risk of bacteria and infections. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid low-quality or long-stored dairy products. This is why some people reduce their consumption of yogurt and other cold foods during the month of Sawan.

The month of Sawan not only symbolizes religious faith, but also preaches restraint, discipline, and a pure lifestyle. Maintaining sattvic food helps maintain balance between the body and mind. However, dietary rules may vary depending on a person’s faith, tradition, and health status. Thus, the tradition of avoiding onion, garlic, and yogurt during the month of Sawan is linked to religious beliefs as well as seasonal and health considerations.
