Delhi. The Supreme Court on Friday made an important comment regarding medical seats. The court said that at a time when the country is facing a huge shortage of doctors, precious medical seats should not be wasted. The court directed the authorities to conduct fresh counseling to fill the vacant seats. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan asked the admission authorities to conduct special counseling and complete the admission process for medical courses by December 30.
The bench ordered, ‘Keeping in mind the facts and circumstances that the country is facing a huge shortage of doctors, precious medical seats should not go waste. We are inclined to extend the period as a last chance.’ The apex court gave this order while considering the petitions in which an appeal has been made to direct the admission authorities to conduct a special round of counseling for the seats remaining vacant even after 5 rounds of counseling.
On the other hand, the Kolkata High Court gave conditional permission to the doctors of the Bengal United Forum to organize a sit-in demonstration at Dorina Crossing in the city centre Esplanade. A single bench of Justice Tirthanka Ghosh has allowed the doctors’ forum to protest at Dorina Crossing from 20-26 December. Senior doctors are demanding justice for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old female medical postgraduate student at RG Kar Hospital. The body of the female doctor was found in the hospital on August 9. The court directed the doctors of the United Forum to protest about 50 feet away from Dorina Crossing so that traffic on the busy road is not disrupted. The doctors approached the court after the Kolkata Police refused to allow the protest.
