Kolkata. The political turmoil has once again intensified in the politics of West Bengal. Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has given an open warning to the police officers of the state. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee alleged that some police officers were deliberately targeting Trinamool Congress leaders and workers to please the current BJP government. He said that a list of names of such officers is being prepared and no one will be spared after the change of government in the state. After his statement, there has been an increase in the stir in Bengal politics. This warning of Abhishek Banerjee has come at a time when former minister Indranil Sen, who is facing investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), has been arrested by Kolkata Police in a case of alleged financial irregularities.
Abhishek Banerjee raised serious questions on the functioning of police officers on Thursday, 29 October. He alleged that false cases were being filed against Trinamool Congress workers at the behest of the BJP government led by Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari. According to him, some police officers are harassing opposition party leaders and supporters to get good postings and government favors.
Abhishek Banerjee warned, ‘I am preparing a list of names. No one will be spared after the change of government. He claimed that those officers who feel that they have got better posts by pleasing the present government, will have to answer for their actions in the future.
The TMC leader said he would identify all the police officers who were allegedly taking action against opposition workers on the instructions of the Chief Minister. He also said that political circumstances may change after two years and then the role of such officers will be reviewed. However, he did not make public the name of any police officer in his statement.
Abhishek Banerjee also mentioned an IPS officer from West Medinipur district. He claimed that the concerned officer had congratulated him on his victory before the assembly elections, but after the change of power in the state, the same officer is targeting Trinamool Congress workers. He called it against administrative impartiality. However, these allegations have not been independently confirmed.
After the recent change of power in Bengal, the conflict between BJP and Trinamool Congress has increased continuously. Currently, power in the state is with the BJP government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, while Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is playing the role of the opposition. There have been disputes between the two parties regarding political violence, allegations of corruption, administrative action and the role of police.
Abhishek Banerjee alleges that the BJP government is using administrative agencies to weaken political opponents. He claimed that a large number of TMC workers have been implicated in cases that have no connection with the actual incidents. However, the final decision on the legal status of the cases registered by the police and the allegations made in them will be based only on the investigation and judicial process.
Meanwhile, the arrest of former West Bengal Tourism and Culture Minister Indranil Sen has further increased the political controversy. Indranil Sen was arrested by Kolkata Police on Wednesday, October 28, after a lengthy interrogation by the Enforcement Directorate. A case has been registered against him for alleged financial irregularities in the sale of Durga Puja preview shows and special entry passes.
According to investigating agencies, Indranil Sen and his wife Madhuchanda Sen were allegedly associated with the MassArt Society. This organization is accused of raising funds and committing financial irregularities in the name of special entry passes and preview shows in Durga Puja events. The Enforcement Directorate and Kolkata Police are investigating the case at different levels.
According to the information, Indranil Sen was called for questioning at the ED office in Salt Lake on Wednesday. After about four hours of interrogation, the Kolkata Police team took him with them to Lalbazar. After this his arrest was confirmed. On Thursday, the court rejected his bail plea and sent him to police custody till November 10.
In this case, complainant Jaideep Mukherjee has alleged that expensive tickets were sold for the preview show of Durga Puja between the year 2022 and 2024. It was also said in the complaint that money was collected from people by pretending that the programs were related to UNESCO. The investigating agencies are probing this alleged financial transaction and the use of the money raised. At present the allegations have not been proved in the court.
Reacting to the arrest of Indranil Sen, Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari said that the investigation into the case was going on for a long time. He claimed that Sen may not be the only one involved in the alleged financial irregularities and the scope of investigation could also extend to other influential people.
The Chief Minister also made serious allegations while taking the name of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He expressed apprehension that other people may have also benefited from the money obtained through alleged irregularities. However, no conclusive evidence in this regard has been made public. For now, these allegations should be seen only as a political statement.
