Senior AIUDF leaders Anwar Ali, Harun Ahmed resign

Assam: In a setback to the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), senior party members Advocate Anwar Ali and Dr Haroon Ahmed on Wednesday resigned with immediate effect. Both Haroon Ahmed and Anwar Ali were long-time members of the party, having been in the party for 13 years and 16 years respectively. They held the post of general secretary of the AIUDF and were key members of the party’s central committee.

The two leaders reached the party headquarters today to submit their resignation in writing. In a letter to Ajmal, they informed about “resigning from primary membership and all other departments of the party with immediate effect”. Both Ahmed and Ali mentioned in the letter that it was “completely my personal decision”. Notably, the AIUDF earlier this month suspended Algapur MLA Nizam Uddin Chowdhury for six years for being involved in anti-party activities. The suspension order was issued by the party’s central committee and signed by general secretary and MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed.

The letter stated that Choudhary’s conduct was deemed “anti-party” and had caused considerable damage to the organisation, adversely affecting its reputation. “The Central Committee of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has been closely monitoring your activities, which have repeatedly been found to be controversial and detrimental to the interest of the party. These actions have been categorised as anti-party activities, which have negatively impacted the organisation and tarnished the reputation of the party,” it read.
