Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam continued to improve on Monday. According to the latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS), the number of affected people has dropped to 1.28 lakh, while the death toll from this year’s floods remains at 87.
The latest report indicates that 1,28,071 people remain affected across 380 villages spanning 24 revenue circles in seven districts: Charaideo, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Biswanath, Jorhat, and Lakhimpur.
Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district with 55,200 people affected, followed by Charaideo (34,050), Jorhat (20,209), Golaghat (10,201), and Dhemaji (8,333). Lower numbers of affected people have been reported from Lakhimpur and Biswanath.
The bulletin states that 14,230.15 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged. Crop damage is most severe in Charaideo, followed by Sivasagar, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, and Biswanath.
Relief and rehabilitation operations are underway in the flood-affected districts. Currently, the state government is operating 55 relief camps and 17 relief distribution centers, providing shelter and assistance to 11,066 people.
The relief camps are housing 4,835 men, 4,738 women, and 1,462 children; additionally, there are 24 pregnant or lactating women and seven persons with disabilities. The highest number of camp inmates is in Sivasagar, followed by Jorhat and Dhemaji. According to the bulletin, the Dhansiri (South) River is still flowing above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat district. However, none of the state’s rivers are currently flowing above their highest flood levels.
The district administration is engaged in relief distribution, rehabilitation measures, and damage assessment, while also keeping a close watch on the flood situation in the affected areas.
