Punjab: In today’s hyper-connected world, digital screens have become an essential part of everyday life, from smartphones, tablets, and laptops to televisions and e-readers. These devices offer immense access to information and convenience, but they also pose a significant and growing threat to overall eye health. Ophthalmologists across India are seeing an alarming increase in digital screen-related eye problems, especially among children, young adults, and working professionals.
Digital Strain
This is one of the most common complaints. Prolonged screen time can cause digital eye strain (DES), which can lead to eye fatigue, irritation, blurred vision, headaches, and neck and shoulder pain. This isn’t just discomfort; it also reflects internal stress on the visual system. When we constantly stare at screens, our blink rate decreases by up to 60 percent, leading to poor distribution of the tear film and irritation.
Refractive eye problems are on the rise
One of the most notable trends seen in eye clinics across India is the increase in refractive errors, particularly myopia (nearsightedness). Myopia has become increasingly prevalent among children and young adults. Recent research shows that prolonged near-focus on digital screens and limited outdoor time accelerates eyeball size, leading to myopia. Astigmatism, a distortion of corneal curvature, can become more pronounced with continued near-focus and visual fatigue. Both of these conditions can cause blurred vision at distance and near, leading many people to rely increasingly on corrective lenses.
