Punjab: Flood-affected farmer’s son gets bicycle with community support

Punjab: Amid the devastation caused by the recent floods in parts of Punjab, a heartwarming story of kindness and community support has emerged from Baupur Jadid village in Kapurthala district. Recently, we reported how Sukhdev Singh, a marginal farmer, had made a small promise to his son – to gift him a bicycle after the paddy harvest. But when torrential rains and surging waters devastated his three-acre farm and damaged his house, his promise, like many others, was shattered. Sukhdev had previously explained, “I told my son that after this year’s harvest, I would buy him a bicycle.”
His 10-year-old son, Sukhdeep Singh, a fourth-grade student, had long desired a bicycle to ride to school like his classmates. But when floodwaters submerged their fields and forced the family to seek shelter elsewhere, that dream seemed out of reach. However, after The Tribune recently highlighted the family’s plight in a report, help poured in from across the region. Moved by the story, generous donors in Amritsar stepped forward to fulfill the boy’s wish. Sukhdeep is now the proud owner of a new bicycle, gifted to him by kind citizens who were moved by his story. The family also received financial assistance to compensate for the flood damage. “After my farm was destroyed, I told my son that cycling wouldn’t be possible. He was upset, but I am grateful to everyone who came forward to help us. People are very generous and kind,” said a grateful Sukhdev Singh.
