Eight special trains, including those to Chennai, will run until August.

Chennai. In view of the increasing rush of rail passengers in Tamil Nadu, Southern Railway has taken a significant decision. The railway administration has announced the extension of services for eight special express trains operating on key routes—including Chennai, Podanur, Tirunelveli, and Mettupalayam—throughout the month of August. This decision is expected to bring relief to thousands of passengers, particularly those traveling during weekends and festivals.

A press release issued by Southern Railway on Friday stated that, considering the steadily rising number of passengers and high demand for tickets, the operation of certain existing special trains will continue beyond their originally scheduled periods. The railways believe that operating these additional trains will ease the pressure on regular services and make it easier for passengers to secure confirmed tickets.

According to the railways, the services of special express trains running between Podanur and Chennai Central have been extended until the last week of August. Special Express Train No. 06028, running from Podanur to Chennai Central on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, will now continue to operate according to its scheduled timetable from August 7 to August 30.

Similarly, the services of Special Express Train No. 06027, running from Chennai Central to Podanur, have also been extended for the same period. This train will also operate regularly from August 7 to August 30. Railway officials state that the extension of these two trains will greatly benefit passengers traveling between Chennai and western Tamil Nadu.

There is also good news for passengers from the southern districts. The operation of the special train running between Tirunelveli and Mettupalayam will also continue through August. Special Train No. 06030, running from Tirunelveli to Mettupalayam every Sunday, will now operate from August 2 to August 30. Meanwhile, the return special train from Mettupalayam to Tirunelveli will operate according to schedule from August 3 to August 31. Railway officials state that the number of passengers on these routes has been steadily increasing for some time. Trains witness heavy crowds, particularly during weekends, holidays, and religious pilgrimages. Consequently, the decision has been made to continue operating additional special trains to provide passengers with more options and ensure a smoother travel experience.

Chennai, Coimbatore, Podanur, Tirunelveli, and Mettupalayam are among the major cities in Tamil Nadu. A large number of students, working professionals, businesspeople, and tourists travel regularly between these cities. Additionally, many people use rail services to visit their hometowns on weekends. Thus, the extension of special train services is seen as a major relief for passengers.

The Railways anticipates a rise in passenger numbers during August due to Independence Day, consecutive holidays, and various religious and social events. Keeping this in mind, the decision to continue operating special trains has been taken as part of advance planning.

Railway officials have also urged passengers to make reservations well in advance. They note that there is significant demand for these special trains. Therefore, those planning to travel should book their tickets early to avoid last-minute inconvenience.

Southern Railway is continuously taking steps to enhance passenger convenience. Decisions such as adding extra coaches, operating special trains, and expanding services on busy routes are made periodically. The Railways aims to provide a safe, comfortable, and seamless travel experience for passengers.

Passengers have also welcomed this decision by the Railways. They believe that the operation of additional trains will increase the chances of securing tickets and reduce reliance on overcrowded regular trains. Travelers, especially those commuting on weekends, stand to benefit significantly from this move.

The Railway administration has clarified that these special trains will operate according to the scheduled timetable. Passengers are advised to check train timings and reservation status before commencing their journey. If the number of passengers increases further in the future, additional services may be considered as needed.

The extension of special train services for August is seen as part of Southern Railway’s strategy to strengthen rail operations in response to rising passenger demand. This move is expected to provide better travel facilities for thousands of passengers while also easing congestion on key routes.
