Punjab: Amandeep Kaur, a dismissed woman constable of Punjab Police who was arrested with heroin on April 2, was granted bail by the District Court today. She had filed a bail plea in the Court on April 29. After hearing arguments from both sides on Thursday, the Court decided to grant bail to Amandeep Kaur. The police had claimed to have arrested Amandeep Kaur with 17.71 grams of heroin. The case had caught public attention, with the DGP dismissing her from service and the incident making headlines for several days. Allegations were also made about her close links with several police officers. Following these developments, she was questioned by the Narcotics Control Bureau and the Intelligence Bureau besides the Punjab Police, but so far no revelations have emerged from those interrogations.
Her lawyer said that they had filed a bail plea, which was heard on Thursday in the Special Court designated for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases. Arguing for the woman constable before the court, he claimed that no heroin was recovered from the constable and she has been falsely implicated in the case. He said that the special court of Judge Mahesh Kumar ordered her release on bail after she furnished a bond of Rs 50,000. He also informed that the police have not yet filed a chargesheet in the court. The special court ordered the dismissed woman constable not to leave the country without permission. Also, she should not tamper with evidence nor attempt to threaten or incite anyone connected with the case. The court also directed that the dismissed constable should appear in court in every hearing and if she fails to do so, her bail will be cancelled.
