Punjab: Chaura’s police remand extended again

Punjab: Police remand of Narain Singh Chaura, who allegedly fired at former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple on December 4, has been extended by three days. Chaura was produced before an Amritsar court today after completion of his remand period. Following the court’s intervention, police obtained CCTV footage of Chaura’s activities in the Golden Temple complex between December 2 and 4. ACP Jaspal Singh said, “The irony is that Akali leaders accusing the police of going soft are unnecessarily politicising the matter while the investigation is being carried out in a very transparent manner.

The Akalis had obtained CCTV footage in their possession to substantiate their allegations, in which Chaura was seen roaming in the Golden Temple complex with some unidentified persons during the incident and even two days before that. But the same CCTV footage is not being given to us for investigation.” It is learnt that police are also tracing Chaura’s movements along the border in recent days through the mobile phone recovered from his possession. Sources said that on December 1, his location was found in the Khemkaran border belt. Meanwhile, the police is also looking for Dharam Singh, a resident of Ekalgadda Khurd village in Tarn Taran district. Dharam is said to be close to Chaura. Another suspect Jasbir Jassa, a resident of Mandiala village in Tarn Taran district, has been detained for questioning.
