Poacher caught with rhino horn

Golaghat: A poacher with rhino horn has been caught in Assam’s Golaghat district in a joint operation by Assam Police and Forest Department, officials said on Saturday. The arrest was made on Friday and the captured poacher was identified as Joggu Pegu. Apart from rhino horn, firearms were also recovered from the captured poacher.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, Arun Vignesh, while speaking to ANI over phone, said, “The captured poacher was involved in the recent rhino poaching incident in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.”

He said, “We caught him in Kamargaon area near Bokakhat. We also recovered a rhinoceros horn from him.”
On January 22, a female rhinoceros was reportedly poached in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.

Forest guards of the park had recovered the carcass of a female rhinoceros from the area of Maklung Forest Camp under the Agoratoli forest area of the national park, and poachers had chopped off its horn.
DFO said that further investigation is going on. (ANI)
