Parliamentary standing Committee for Law and Justice meeting begins

New Delhi: The meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law and Justice has begun. Discussion on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is on the agenda of the meeting.

Less than a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong pitch for Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country, a high-level parliamentary standing committee is holding a meeting on the issue on Monday. The Rajya Sabha Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, headed by BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi, will consider the proposal. Sushil Modi had earlier told that the panel would seek opinion of all stakeholders on the matter.

Representatives of the Department of Legal Affairs, Legislative Department as well as the Law Commission of India have also been invited to the meeting. UCC proposes to make personal law of citizens which applies equally to all citizens irrespective of their religion, gender. At present the personal laws of different communities are governed by their own religion. Earlier, on June 14, the 22nd Law Commission had sought views from the public and recognized religious organizations to examine the Uniform Civil Code. The general public can send their opinion on this matter to the commission by July 14.
