Jajpur: A rape accused along with his relative faint reporteldy after hearing court’s judgement for 20 years’ rigorious imprisionment (RI) in Odisha’s Jajpur district.
While conducting a final hearing of a minor girl’s rape case, the Additional District & Sessions Judge-cum-Special Court Under POCSO Act, Jajpur today convicted one Sukadeb Rout alias Pinku on charges of kidnapping and raping a 16-year-old girl in 2022.
Based on the statements and evidences of eight people, the court today sentenced Rout to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. In case of failure to pay the fine, the accused will have to serve another six more months’ jail term.
This apart, the court also directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the rape survivor, who is said to be the relative of the convict.
On hearing the court’s judgment, Sukadeb and his relative fainted following which both of them were rushed to the Jajpur District Headquarter Hospital for treatment.
Sukadeb, a native of Brahmabarada area, on January 14, 2022 had reportedly taken the rape survivor, who was then Plus Two first year student, to Puri and later to Surat and had raped her.
After the girl went missing, her father filed a case at Jajpur Sadar Police Statoin, based on which cops started a probe and rescued the girl from Surat.
Later, the girl in her statement to the police and court confessed to have been raped by Sukadeb, due to which the accused was arrested and forwarded to the court.
