New Delhi (IANS) | Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has come out in support of the wrestler protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and asked the authorities concerned to take prompt action to ensure justice. Significantly, some of India’s top wrestlers including Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik are protesting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi along with Asian and Commonwealth Games medalist Vinesh Phogat. WFI President Brij Bhushan is demanding action against Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers.
Neeraj Chopra came out in support of the wrestlers on Friday. It is sad to see our athletes on the streets demanding justice,” Chopra said in a tweet on Friday. They have worked hard to represent our great country and make us proud.
Chopra is the second Indian Olympic gold medalist after shooter Abhinav Bindra to come out in support of the wrestlers.
Chopra wrote, “As a nation, we are responsible for protecting the dignity of each individual athlete.
Chopra said, what is happening should never happen. This is a sensitive issue and should be dealt with in a fair and transparent manner.
The concerned authorities should take prompt action to ensure justice is done, he said.
It appears Chopra responded to a request for support from the protesting wrestler. His tweet was later retweeted by Vinesh Phogat.
While Chopra and Bindra have supported the wrestlers, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president and sprint legend P.T. Usha has criticized wrestlers for seeking support from political parties.
The Usha-led IOA on Thursday constituted a two-member ad-hoc committee comprising Bhupendra Singh Bajwa, IOA executive committee member, and Asian and Commonwealth Games medalist shooter Suma Shirur, empowered to run the WFI office and conduct elections within 45 days. given.
