Mumbai: Suburban train services on the Central and Harbor lines between Byculla and Sandhurst Road stations were delayed on Saturday evening as many employees (motormen) had gone to attend the funeral of their colleague. A railway official gave this information.
The incident is raising questions whether this was a planned protest as motormen have in the past raised the issue of excessive work pressure.
Due to delay in rail services in the evening, a large number of passengers remained stranded at CSMT and other stations.
“The services were delayed as many motormen had gone to Kalyan to attend the funeral of their colleague Muralidhar Sharma,” the official said. Sharma died while crossing the tracks between Byculla and Sandhurst Road stations on Friday. He said that Sharma’s last rites were to be held in the afternoon but it could be held at 5 pm.
