Mizoram: More than 18,000 ILPs issued at Sairang railway station in three months

Aizawl: Aizawl district police issued 18,193 Inner Line Permits (ILPs) at Sairang Railway Station between September 14 and December 17, reflecting stricter monitoring of entries into the state, Superintendent of Police Zosangliana, IPS, said on Thursday.

At a press briefing, the SP stated that nearly 60 per cent of the permits were granted to tourists, while the remaining 40 per cent were issued to labourers.

During the same period, police deported three individuals who arrived by train without valid ILPs and removed 36 beggars from the district.

Zosangliana added that weekly ILP verification drives are being conducted at all police stations.

So far this year, 160 such drives have taken place, resulting in the identification of 932 people either without valid permits or using invalid ILPs. Seventy-seven cases have been registered in connection with these violations.

Regarding overall crime in the district, the SP said 1,764 cases have been recorded in Aizawl from January to December 17. These include 11 murder cases, 10 of which have been solved, with one still under investigation.

He highlighted that Mizoram maintains one of the highest conviction rates in the country. In the Aizawl district, 91.7 per cent of cases brought before courts have already been disposed of.

Police records show that 1,150 cases have been solved this year, with charge sheets filed in 1,009 cases. Investigations are ongoing in 421 cases, while 333 cases remain unresolved. Around 2,000 accused individuals have been arrested in connection with registered cases.

Property-related crimes, including theft and burglary, made up 66 per cent of all offences. Bawngkawn Police Station recorded the highest number of cases, registering 636 incidents this year.

On drug-related offences, Zosangliana said 32 cases were filed under the ND&PS Act, leading to the arrest of 36 people. Narcotic substances seized during this period were valued at approximately Rs 43.296 crore.

The police also registered 88 cases under the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act, 2025, with 97 arrests. Seized items included around 755 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor and quantities of beer.

The SP added that 158 cases of unnatural deaths were reported this year, including 30 suicides, 12 drowning cases, and 36 deaths due to drug overdose. The remaining 78 deaths were attributed to accidents or causes still under investigation.

He said enforcement of the government’s ban on firecrackers and fireworks has been intensified, with regular inspections at all police stations. From next week, police will work with the Central Young Mizo Association to improve compliance.

Zosangliana concluded that strict law and order measures are being enforced across Aizawl district to ensure peaceful Christmas and New Year celebrations, assuring the public of a safe and secure festive season.
