Meghalaya Police on alert on those committing fraud by posing as courier agents

The state police issued an advisory on Monday, cautioning the public about fraudsters posing as agents of courier services like FedEx. The scam involves phone calls to targeted individuals falsely claiming that the consignment in their name contains contraband.

SP (City) Vivek Siyem said ‘scammers’ often impersonate central law enforcement agencies like Customs, CBI, NCB etc. They inform the target that their credentials are being used for money laundering and pressure them to transfer large sums of money. account, reportedly subject to RBI approval.

To further intimidate their targets, scammers threaten arrest in most cases. In other cases, victims are instructed to lodge complaints online through apps like AnyDesk, who can be taken advantage of and defrauded. SIEM advised against downloading apps from unwanted callers.

The public was urged to verify calls regarding disorderly objects and report any such incidents to their respective police stations for verification and further action.
