Shillong: The Meghalaya government has approved a major road project worth Rs 265 crore to construct a 47-km stretch from Phlangwanbroi in East Khasi Hills to Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills.
The project is expected to enhance connectivity and boost tourism in the region.
Mawsynram MLA Ollan Sing Suin told reporters on Sunday that the new road will link with the intermediate road at Ranikor and pass through two constituencies.
About 27 km of the road will be in Mawsynram constituency, while the remaining 20 km will run through Ranikor.
Suin added that the tender for the project is expected to be issued this week. He clarified that the road will be constructed under a regular state scheme and is not funded by the World Bank.
The MLA also mentioned another road project connecting Weiloi to Phlangwanbroi, which is pending World Bank approval.
He expressed hope that funding will be granted next year. Once completed, this road will improve connectivity from Mawphlang to Weiloi, Phlangwanbroi, and Ranikor, upgrading it to an intermediate road.
According to Suin, both projects are vital for improving the poor road conditions in Mawsynram, which he described as “pathetic” at present. He added that better road infrastructure will also give a major boost to tourism in the area.
Suin said the long-awaited projects are a Christmas and New Year gift for the people of Mawsynram and called them dream projects for the constituency.
The two road projects are expected to significantly improve connectivity, economic activity, and tourism potential in one of Meghalaya’s most scenic yet poorly connected regions
