MAWKYRWAT: After leaving a mark in the last Assembly elections by winning four seats, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) has now set its sight on the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council which will soon go to elections.
VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Friday said the party’s next target is to rule these two ADCs and fare well in next year’s Lok Sabha elections.
He was addressing a gathering at an enrollment drive of the party held at the Dorbar Hall in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills. Other leaders of the VPP were also present.
Basaiawmoit claimed that people, especially the poor and downtrodden, of Khasi-Jaintia Hills region are turning towards the VPP.
“We are getting a good response from people wherever we are going. They want the VPP to put up candidates in the MDC elections from their constituencies,” he said.
He was optimistic that the VPP will soon occupy the space of the regional parties in the state. He called upon people to throw away all these regional parties which have been “hand in glove” with the ruling National People’s Party.
Stating that this is the first enrollment drive in the Mawkyrwat constituency and it will continue in the upcoming months, Basaiawmoit said the VPP has not promised tickets to anyone for MDC elections from this constituency.
“We welcome all those who want to join our party with good intentions. But we will not entertain those who want to take advantage of the party’s popularity for personal benefits,” he said.
The VPP’s North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum called upon the people of Mawkyrwat to join the party. He claimed it is the only regional party that has a strong, dynamic and visionary leadership.
“Bah Ardent is not only an MLA, he is also a true leader who wants to serve the people of the state,” Nongrum said.
