Manny and Tom make a cameo appearance as Maverick in the final cut of Top Gun
Manny Jacinto is talking about his small role in the final cut of Maverick in Tom Cruise: Top Gun. The star, who has been gaining attention for his work on The Acolyte, spoke to GQ magazine and said he trained for months to get Top Gun made, only to see that all of his scenes were left in the editing room, and that his character Fritz He briefly only appeared in the background for a few scenes.
Manny said: “It was a good thing that there was a bit of a ruckus, but I wasn’t surprised. [On set] there was a sense of where the movie was going, like I could see them focusing the camera more on these [other] guys and not, ‘We spent so much time on our scenes. Luckily, it was still a great experience: you get to see this huge machine work, see how Tom Cruise works and be a small part of this huge franchise.'” He added: “Ultimately, Tom Cruise writes the stories for Tom Cruise. It’s up to us (Asian Americans, people of color) to be that (for ourselves). We can’t wait for someone else to do it.” If “we want big stories, we have to make them ourselves.” Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun Maverick saw Tom reprise his iconic role after 36 years as he trained a new group of recruits. It starred Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. The film released on May 27, 2022, to positive reviews and grossed over $1 billion worldwide.
