Agartala Press Club demands enhanced journalist security

Tripura: The Agartala Press Club met with Tripura Police Director General Anurag Thakur on April 24th to express serious concern about the safety of journalists in the state. The club demanded further strengthening of security arrangements for journalists and stressed the need for strict action against the misuse of press stickers.

Press Club representatives raised with the DGP the issue of security challenges faced by journalists in many places recently. Consequently, it is essential to establish a clear and robust security framework for journalists at the state level.

At the meeting, the Press Club also stated that press stickers are being misused by some anti-social elements, which not only impacts law and order but also undermines the credibility of genuine journalists. The Club demanded that strict regulations and monitoring systems be implemented to prevent the misuse of press identification.

According to the Press Club, misuse of press stickers has been observed on vehicles and other activities, making it difficult for security agencies to identify genuine and fake journalists. The need for a systematic verification process was highlighted to control this situation.

The meeting with DGP Anurag Thakur also discussed issues related to journalists’ safety, workplace challenges, and press freedom. The Press Club urged that special security protocols be developed for journalists, especially in areas where they face risks while reporting.

The Club representatives also stated that journalists are an important part of democracy and ensuring their safety should be the primary responsibility of the administration. They suggested establishing regular communication between the police and media organizations to ensure timely resolution of issues.

Following this meeting, it is hoped that the state administration will seriously consider this issue and may issue new guidelines regarding the safety of journalists. Furthermore, monitoring and verification mechanisms can be strengthened to prevent misuse of press stickers.

This initiative by the Agartala Press Club is being considered an important step in the interest of the journalistic community, which is likely to increase the safety of media personnel and transparency in their work in the future.
