Imphal: Two of the largest organizations representing the Naga and Kuki people in Manipur appealed on Tuesday to the general public and all concerned individuals—especially members of both tribal communities—to maintain peace and refrain from any form of violence.
The appeal comes amidst rising tensions following the burning of Kuki people’s farmhouses in Kangpokpi district of Manipur on Monday.
The United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of Naga tribes in Manipur, and the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the largest traditional, social, and political organization of the Kuki people, jointly condemned the arson incident in Kangchup Songlung (Part-II) village of Kangpokpi district.
The incident was allegedly carried out by the Zeliangrong United Front-Kamsom (ZUF-K), an underground group associated with the Naga community.
The appeal and condemnation were issued after a joint meeting of the two apex bodies at the Kangpokpi district headquarters on Tuesday.
The meeting, chaired by UNC President Ng. Lorho, strongly condemned the burning of houses in broad daylight in K. Songlung (Part-II) village by the ZUF-K, which resulted in property damage and instilled fear among the victims.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Ng. Lorho appealed to the general public and all concerned individuals to maintain peace and avoid any form of inter-community violence.
The two apex tribal bodies also cautioned fellow tribals against writing or posting baseless rumors, spreading false propaganda, or creating enmity and tension between the communities.
