Major revelation regarding conversion allegations at KGMU; alleged network was being operated via a WhatsApp group.

Lucknow. New facts are continuously coming to light in the case related to alleged conversion and harassment of women doctors in the prestigious King George Medical University (KGMU) located in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Media reports based on the investigation by the Special Task Force (STF) have claimed that a network of alleged conversion related activities was being conducted through a WhatsApp group in the university campus. People associated with this network are accused of inviting outside religious speakers to hostels and planning activities through meetings. The scope of investigation into the case is now reported to have expanded beyond KGMU to Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGI) and other medical institutions. However, final judicial confirmation of these allegations has not yet taken place.
According to media reports, investigation has revealed mention of a WhatsApp group named ‘Islamic Medicos’. It is alleged that some doctors, junior residents, medical staff and outsiders were associated with this group. The investigating agencies are trying to find out what kind of conversations took place in the group and whether it was used for any illegal activity.
Reports claimed that some religious speakers from Agra, Deoband, Bareilly and other places were called to the hostel premises on the pretext of meeting. Religious discussions allegedly took place there. It is alleged that after these meetings some people used to discuss activities related to conversion. However, the actual purpose of these meetings, the role of the people involved in them and their connection with any criminal conspiracy is a matter of investigation.
Questions have also been raised regarding the use of digital mediums in this entire episode. According to the report, in addition to normal phone calls, WhatsApp and FaceTime calls were used between the concerned people. Efforts are being made in the investigation to find out what information was shared through these digital contacts and whether it was related to the allegations made by the women doctors.
The case began in December 2025 following a complaint by a female resident doctor. The female doctor had made serious allegations like harassment and pressure to convert. After the complaint, investigation into the case started and later its responsibility was handed over to STF. During the investigation, the role of some doctors and employees associated with various departments of the university came under question.
It is being told that STF investigated the facts, complaints and other available information related to the case for several months. After this, in the report prepared, information has come out about investigating the role of some doctors and employees and recommending necessary action.
In this matter, questions are also being raised on the functioning of the university administration. According to media reports, there have been allegations of not taking some complaints seriously in time and not taking adequate steps at the departmental level. Now it is a matter of investigation as to what action was taken by the concerned authorities after receiving the complaint and whether the prescribed procedures were followed or not.
The news of expanding the scope of investigation of this case related to KGMU to other medical institutions has also increased the stir. Investigation of some contacts and possible relations related to PGI has come to light. However, just because the name of another institute comes up in the investigation does not prove the criminal involvement of the doctors or employees there. The investigating agencies will have to determine the role of each person on the basis of independent evidence.
Meanwhile, the KGMU administration is also preparing for further action in the matter. According to reports, disciplinary action is being considered in respect of 13 doctors whose names have cropped up in the investigation. An emergency meeting of the University’s Executive Council is proposed on 6 November. In this meeting, decisions can be taken on proposals like constituting an inquiry committee against the concerned doctors and removing them from administrative responsibilities.
The Uttar Pradesh government has also taken the matter seriously. On the basis of the STF report, there is information that the Medical Education Department has given instructions to the KGMU administration to take action against the concerned employees as per rules and to provide its report. It is clear from this that the investigation of the case is not limited to criminal charges only, but the administrative accountability of the institute is also under the ambit of investigation.
Safety of women studying and working in any medical university, fair hearing of complaints and institutional discipline are of utmost importance. In such a situation, this matter is not limited only to allegations of conversion, but has also become linked to women’s safety and the responsibility of the university administration.
At present, the investigating agencies are investigating the alleged WhatsApp network, external contacts and the roles of the concerned persons. In the coming days, the administrative action to be taken on the investigation report and the Executive Council meeting on November 6 may prove to be important. The final determination of the genuineness of the allegations and the criminal responsibility of a person will be based on the evidence obtained in the investigation and the judicial process.
