Ludhiana: The Kila Raipur Games, also known as the Rural Olympics, concluded with much fanfare on Thursday. Over the past three days, people witnessed a variety of sports activities, including events like bullock cart races and kabaddi, showcasing the state’s rich heritage. Although these games have been held for decades, this year’s festival was special because the famous bullock cart races were reintroduced after a 12-year hiatus. For most of the audience, especially the elderly, these races were a throwback to the “good old days.”
Two elderly people in the stands were heard saying: “Bullock cart races bring real joy because they are the backbone of rural sports. In fact, these races should be held twice a year.” According to organizers, many Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) came especially to enjoy the traditional games. Watching from the stands, 80-year-old Rajbir Singh, a resident of Kila Raipur, said that he comes to the stadium every year to watch traditional sports like kabaddi, hockey, races, jugglery stunts, and tug-of-war. However, he also added that the return of the bullock cart races this year has increased the fun manifold. With a twinkle in his eye, Singh said, “In the last 12 years, the stands haven’t been as packed as they were this year. Thousands of people who love traditional sports came to watch the famous bullock cart races. People of all ages and backgrounds came in large numbers to witness the pride of Punjab.”
In a heartwarming sight, many elderly people were seen with their grandchildren, sharing their love and passion for the state’s culture and heritage. 75-year-old Raghubir Singh from Jassowal village was with his nine-year-old grandson, Gobind Brar. Raghubir Singh said, “Since we keep cattle at home, even bulls for farming, my grandson was eager to see how the bulls compete in the field. He really enjoyed the event.” The kabaddi matches on the final day were also a hit. Colonel Surinder Singh Grewal, president of the Kila Raipur Sports Society, said this year’s event was special because of the immense love and support shown by the people. He said the bullock cart races played a key role, drawing spectators from across the state. Grewal said, “I thanked the people for their love and affection. As soon as the event ended, people, including the players, were lost in nostalgia.”
