Kendrapara: Ex-MLA’s daughter files Police complaint against husband, in-laws alleging dowry torture

Kendrapara: Dr. Debasmita Sharma, daughter of former Aul constituency MLA Devendra Sharma of Kendrapara district has brought dowry torture allegations against her hubby and in-laws. She has filed a police complaint in this regard wherein she claimed that she was asked to bring Rs 50 lakhs and as she could not bring the same, she was tortured.

In the complaint, Dr. Sharma alleged that her in-laws are torturing her and also have tried to kill her at different times. Dr. Devasmita Sharma, who was the candidate for Aul Assembly constituency in the 2024 election, has herself complained the matter at the Aul police station.

According to the complaint filed by Dr. Devsmita in police station, on December 14, 2022, she got married to Dr. Rahul Pratap Roy as per Vedic rites. After the marriage, Devashmita lived with her husband in their house at Petin Sahi in Buxibazar, Cuttack.

However, merely within one month of the marriage, her mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, and other in-laws and husband started to scold and beat her for dowry, she complained. She has filed complaint against 6 persons.

According to Devasmita as she remained silent keeping her father’s honor in view, the in-laws tortured her more.

Her husband Dr. Rahul Pratap Rai used to get drunk and beat and abuse her, she alleged. As his father was an MLA, her in-laws used to force her to bring 50 lakh rupees from her father’s house. She told her father about this. However, as her father said that he is not capable of giving such a huge amount of money, her in-laws tortured her more, she mentioned in the Complaint.

It has been alleged that her husband Rahul Pratap came home drunk and forced Devsmita to drink alcohol too. However, as she objected, she was being branded with lighted cigarette.

Besides, since she was working outside, all her gold and silver jewelleries remained with her mother-in-law. She alleged that her in-laws sold all these and used the money in the housework. Her husband takes away her salary every month, she also alleged.

Her father’s side tried to resolve the issue twice before, but as her husband treated her like an animal, she was helpless and finally filed a written complaint at the police station and begged for justice.

When asked about this to Aul Police Station IIC Sabyasachi Satpathy, he said that after receiving the complaint of Dr. Devasmita Sharma, a case has been registered and investigation has been started.

In this matter we are yet to get any reaction of Dr. Devasmita or anybody of her in-laws or husband. However, it has been said that the truth will surface following the detailed probe.
