Jharkhand: The traditional Dokra craft of Dumka is now moving towards global recognition. The GI tagged Dokra craft of the district will now be displayed in the BRICS ministerial meeting. This international event is being organized in Kochi, Kerala on 8th and 9th July, where this traditional handicraft of Jharkhand will be displayed and put for sale among the delegates from India and abroad. Dumka’s products have been selected for this prestigious platform at the initiative of Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society (JSLPS). On Saturday, the consignment of Dokra craft was dispatched from Dumka to Ranchi, where it will be integrated with other selected state products and sent to Kochi. This exhibition will include sculptures depicting tribal lifestyle, traditional jewellery, artistic figures of animals and birds, lamp-posts, vases and many handicraft products related to home decor. All the objects have been made using the traditional lost wax technique, which is considered to be the special identity of this craft. This craft has been prepared by the women craftsmen of Maa Lakhi Aajeevika Sakhi Mandal located in Jagudih of Dumka district. These women, with the help of JSLPS, have given a new shape to the traditional art according to the needs of the modern market. After getting the GI tag, the credibility and demand of this art has increased rapidly. According to officials, the presence of this craft on an international platform like BRICS will give a new identity to the cultural heritage of Jharkhand. Besides, the chances of women artisans getting better market, fair prices and new customers will increase. This initiative is not only promoting handicrafts but also playing an important role in the economic empowerment of rural women and preservation of traditional art. In the coming time, this craft can make its strong identity in the international market.
