Hyderabad: The main opposition BRS on Tuesday criticized the Congress government for failing to implement its promise of 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections. The party demanded for a resurvey and to hold elections only after the Kamareddy Declaration promising 42 per cent quota was enforced.
“If the State government does not relent, the BRS will join hands with like-minded forces and fight to ensure justice for BCs,” former Minister and MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav said in an informal interaction with the media after a meeting of GHMC corporators and MLAs at Telangana Bhavan.
He said BCs would not accept mere assurances from political parties as promised by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. Instead, he emphasized the need for passing a legislation in the Assembly, and introducing a bill in Parliament by the Center for approval,” he said.
The former Minister also called for a caste census resurvey, arguing that the Congress government’s survey underreported BCs compared to the previous BRS government’s earlier survey, which placed BCs at 51 per cent.
Srinivas Yadav stated that Telangana’s BC, SC, ST, and minority populations collectively form 90 per cent of the state, while the Congress manipulated numbers to reduce their political representation.
“If constituency delimitation happens with these numbers, Telangana’s Assembly and Parliament seats could decrease. We demand an accurate survey,” he said.
Meanwhile, he announced that BRS president K Chandrashekhar Rao and working president KT Rama Rao would meet GHMC corporators next week to strategize on the no-confidence motion against the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. A final decision would be taken based on political circumstances. He stated that a decision on the GHMC Standing Committee elections would be taken at a meeting on February 17.
