Himanta Biswa Sarma claims: National Democratic Alliance to win big in Assam elections 2026

Assam: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has predicted a landslide victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections. He estimates the alliance will win 90 to 100 seats in the state assembly. He also indicated that the opposition’s tally may be limited to around 20 seats.

Giving a constituency-wise assessment, the Chief Minister stated that the NDA is poised to retain key constituencies in all regions, including Lower Assam and the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD). He stressed that even if the victory margin in Tihu is narrow, senior leader Chandramohan Patwari is expected to win. Sarma further stated that Nalbari is strongly in the NDA’s favor, and the Alliance is likely to win all three seats in the district.

Referring to Upper Assam, the Chief Minister acknowledged a close triangular contest in Sivasagar, particularly involving Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi. However, he stated that the NDA would ultimately emerge victorious in this constituency. Predicting the opposition’s performance, Sarma said the Congress was unlikely to cross the 20-seat mark. He predicted the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) could win five to six seats, while the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) would fail to even open its account. He said the Raijor Dal was expected to win only one seat, likely in Dhing.

The Chief Minister also expressed confidence in individual candidates, saying Narayan Deka would win his seat. In Lower Assam, he identified Dhubri, Golokganj, and Bongaigaon, including Abhayapuri, as constituencies where the NDA is expected to perform well.

In Barpeta district, Sarma predicted the alliance’s victory in the Barpeta, Bhawanipur, and Bajali constituencies. He further claimed that the NDA would win all seats in the BTAD region, further strengthening its dominance in the Bodoland belt.
