Himachal: Meeting of Sholay and Himalaya

Himachal Pradesh: This Independence Day eve, Dharamshala will witness a cinematic bridge between Bollywood and the Himalayas. On August 14, the Tibetan fusion version of the evergreen song “Mehbooba Mehbooba” from Sholay will premiere at Gold Cinema, marking the film’s 50th golden jubilee in a refreshing and memorable way. The project is the brainchild of filmmaker duo Raman Siddharth and Manju Narayan, who left the hustle and bustle of London and Mumbai to embrace the quiet magic of the mountains. In collaboration with the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), they infused the sounds, movements and spirit of the Tibetan tradition into this famous song. Lead actors Kalsang Dolma and Tenzin Nyima take the energy of the song to a new dimension with traditional instruments, mesmerizing dances and Buddhist-inspired visuals.
Shot against the serene backdrop of the Gyuto Karmapa Monastery at Sidhbari, the video exudes authenticity and reverence. Thanking the monastery and the Tibetan community for their support, Raman said, “The concept emerged after deep deliberations with TIPA Director Phuntsok and was realised under the guidance of Tsering Pelden.” Members of the original Sholay team have already praised the effort. The launch is also an artistic tribute to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, whose 90th birthday was recently celebrated with unprecedented grandeur in Dharamsala. Manju Narain said, “This fusion is our heartfelt tribute to Sholay, the Tibetan people and the shared spirit of resilience and art.” Their hope: to give the Himalayas an opportunity to add their own song to this legend, while preserving the magic and grandeur of the original Sholay.
