According to various media reports, three options are being discussed to conduct CBSE board exams twice a year. CBSE is considering the semester system. In the semester system, examinations are conducted twice a year at an interval of six months.

In the current education system, CBSE board examinations are conducted between February and April. There is no update on when the CBSE board exams will be held twice a year. Actually, the Central Board of Secondary Education is still planning it. “The three possible options that have been discussed are conducting exams in the semester system, with the first board exam in January-February and the second in March-April, or conducting a second set of board exams in June along with supplementary or improvement exams,” an official reportedly said. “The way our academic calendar is designed, apart from the schedule of competitive exams and geographical challenges, since CBSE schools are spread across the country and even abroad, the semester system seems less viable,” the official further added. CBSE is the largest educational board in the country. Conducting its exams twice a year will require a lot of solid planning and coordination. Summer and winter vacations are given keeping in mind the weather in India and abroad. Having exams twice a year means changes will have to be made there as well.

At least 55 days will be required for preparing the list of students, releasing notifications, practical and written exams, results, verification, re-evaluation, etc. They will need to plan to maintain a sufficient gap between the two exams. Deciding a timetable for this will not be easy.
The CBSE has told the Union Education Ministry that the current system requires over 150 steps to conduct Class 10 and 12 board exams.
