Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has instructed the Chief Secretary to launch an extensive public awareness campaign in Chhattisgarh aimed at safeguarding society from the harmful consequences of drug abuse. He has emphasized the importance of developing a detailed action plan for this campaign through consultations with prominent figures and organizations actively involved in drug de-addiction efforts nationwide. He has also instructed the Social Welfare Department to present the comprehensive plan for the anti-drug awareness campaign within one month. Additionally, he has highlighted the need for active participation of NGOs, and social, cultural, and religious institutions in this campaign.
In the instructions issued to the Chief Secretary, Chief Minister stated that drug abuse is the worst social evil, one that significantly impacts people’s lives and exposes them to severe health risks including premature death. People consume addictive substances including marijuana, cannabis, opium, tobacco, alcohol, ‘gutka’, smoking, heroin, cocaine, and brown sugar. Chhattisgarh Police is actively taking measures to combat this issue, and the government is making concerted efforts to prevent it. However, the success of this campaign relies on effectively connecting with the public’s mindset and reaching every individual. The escalating prevalence of drug abuse among the youth is a matter of grave concern.
In order to safeguard society from the devastating effects of drug abuse, prevent the younger generation from ruining their lives, and utilize their full potential for nation-building, it is essential to launch an extensive awareness campaign promoting a drug-free lifestyle. Seminars should be organized in secondary schools, colleges, and universities to raise awareness among students. Active collaboration from NGOs, social, cultural, and religious institutions, alongside government efforts, should be encouraged.
