Dileep acquitted in 2017 case, Parvathy Thiruvothu questions the law

Entertainment: Malayalam actor Dileep was acquitted in the 2017 sexual assault case. Following this, filmmaker Parvathy Thiruvothu has been posting stories on social media about how women not only have to deal with assault but also have to escape the law. In her cryptic note, she indirectly questioned the system without naming anyone.
Posting on Instagram, Parvathy, one of the founding members of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), wrote, “First we have to escape assault, then we have to escape the law?” This is Parvathy’s second cryptic note since Dileep’s acquittal in the 2017 case. Previously, on December 8, she wrote on her social media, “We are now seeing a carefully crafted screenplay being so brutally exposed.” Following the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court’s verdict, she also asked, “Justice, what?”
Meanwhile, several Malayalam actors, including Rima Kallingal and Remya Nambeesan, posted the slogan “Avalakopam” (We stand with them) on their social platforms. News agency ANI reported that the WCC first used this slogan after the 2017 attack.

Rima wrote on Instagram, “Always. Now stronger than ever.” Formed in November 2017, the WCC has worked to ensure a safe, equal, and professional environment for women in the film industry through policy initiatives and advocacy.

In a note shared online before the verdict, the WCC spoke about the length and difficulty of the case: “It has not been an easy journey. From victim to survivor. It took 3,215 days to wait for justice.”
The statement continued, “Her fight has ignited many difficult journeys for women in cinema, the Malayalam film industry, and the state of Kerala. It has impacted our thinking and ignited calls for change.”

It added, “The courage and strength she has displayed through all this, while maintaining her faith in the system, is something to be said for.”
