Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has introduced a bill on Uniform Civil Code in the Assembly. BJP has 47 MLAs in the 70-member assembly. Therefore, it is considered certain that the UCC MLA will pass.
What will change with UCC?
1) The legal age for marriage of girls will be 18 years and that of boys will be 21 years.
2) Marriage registration will be mandatory
3) Both husband and wife have equal rights for divorce
4) Prohibition on polygamy, second marriage will not be possible as long as one wife is alive.
5) Girls will have equal rights in inheritance
6) It is necessary to declare live in relationship
7) In case of death of a working son, the responsibility of the elderly parents will be on the wife.
8) In case of husband’s death, if the wife remarries, she will have to share the compensation received with her parents.
According to Dynamite News correspondent, people of Scheduled Tribes will remain outside the purview of the Uniform Civil Code.
The slogan of Jai Shri Ram echoed in the house
During the presentation of the bill by CM Dhami, the ruling party MLAs raised slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai, Vande Mataram and Jai Shri Ram”. Let us tell you, during the assembly elections held in 2022, BJP had promised to implement Uniform Civil Code.
UCC is applicable in Goa
After the enactment of the law, Uttarakhand will be the first state in the country to implement UCC after independence. At the same time, UCC has been in force in Goa since the days of Portuguese rule. Let us tell you that under UCC, uniform laws of marriage, divorce, land, alimony, property and inheritance will be applicable to all the citizens of the state, irrespective of the religion they follow.
